February 2012 Program Review |
Finding the Ability in Disability
Community Employment Resources for People with Disabilities
By Dea Bridge February’s monthly WCHRA program consisted of a panel discussion highlighting local employment resources for people with disabilities. On hand to share options for HR professionals who have a desire to add some diversity to their workforce were panelists Nancy Wall: Workforce Investment Act (WIA) Youth Program, Kathaleen Recker: School to Work Alliance Program (SWAP), Kristi Courter: Colorado Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, and Jana Hill: Center for Independence.
As individual organizations, each has a single goal in mind; helping their clients to find meaningful work within their community. Collectively they help each other match clients with potential employers through networking and referrals. They offer a wide variety of workforce readiness training and adaptive solutions. They work diligently to find a good fit between the client and the employer, help to file required paperwork, provide coaching of newly placed employees and strive to break down barriers based on preconceived notions about hiring people with disabilities. In many situations wages are paid for by the agency as well. Best of all, these services are at no cost to the employer.
When asked, “What are the advantages of hiring employees with a disability”, the panelists had no trouble articulating reasons why it is beneficial to tap into this largely underutilized pool of potential employees. Clients come to an employer pre-screened and pre-trained in the soft skills (business etiquette, presentation, etc.).
